Nerd Nite Winston-Salem

September 4 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Grab a drink and get a little nerdy. Nerd Nite brings together curious people for a night of informal 20-minute talks on fascinating topics — from science and technology to history, pop, culture, and everything in between. Smart speakers, surprising facts, good conversation, and beer, wine or non-alcoholic drinks available for purchase while you learn something new.

This month’s speaker lineup includes:

Team Cognition, or: How to Have a Team That Doesn’t Suck
Clare Dygert, AI Learning Systems Architect & Fractional Chief Learning Strategist

You’ve been on the good teams. You’ve been on the bad ones. But what if the people aren’t the problem — the architecture is? Explore what cognitive science reveals about how great teams think together, why bad teams fail in predictable ways, and what happens when the teammate you’re thinking with isn’t human.

Sounds Legit: The Science of Spotting BS
Kaitlyn Sands, Ph.D., Developmental Psychology Researcher & Science Educator

Take an entertaining tour through the science of BS detection, critical thinking, and our lifelong struggle to tell sense from nonsense. Discover why questionable claims can sound surprisingly meaningful, why some of us are more susceptible than others — and put your own BS-calling skills to the test.

The Storyteller’s Superpower
Matt Brady, MS, Author & Science Communicator

Stories are the oldest technology we have — and they may still be the most powerful tool in our human toolkit. Dive into the neuroscience of narrative, discover the role storytelling played in shaping our species, and explore why stories remain a distinctly powerful human superpower in an AI-driven world that’s trying very hard to out-story us.

Tickets are $10 online and $12 at the door. Price includes museum admission.
